STATEMENT
Working with found textiles of daily life I create art to document the conflicting experiences of mothering. The domestic cloth—bed sheets, a child’s dress, tablecloths —combines and contrasts with found objects, exploring both physical weight and child-like lightheartedness. My wall hangings and soft sculptures are layered conceptually and materially as with the layers of a quilt. I explore the maternal body, personal space, and the parent-child emotional connection through collage, digital printing, and fabric manipulation. Transformation of materials shows the development of identity through the lens of giving birth and care-taking. I create not only to process my own experiences, but also to offer a map for others, making visible and validating the complexities of new motherhood.
